Szimpla Kert- The Ruin Bar

I went to SZIMPLA KERT with 4 more friends. I wondered what a Ruin Bar was and now I know!!!!!!! Basically you take a derelict building, do nothing to it except build loads of bar areas and invite few to bring their rubbish along, tables, chairs, sofas, beds, baths, old cars and you place them randomly around the place. You invite all the graffiti artists to come in and basically give them free rein to do what they like on the walls whenever they want. Sell cheap drinks; get a live band and some DJs party until the wee small hours and you end up with(this is what i know)…….well this is the best bar I have ever been in. The atmosphere is amazing and the concept absolutely brilliant. It’s a must visit to experience nightlife with lots of locals in Budapest.

Szimpla Kert entry

The Hallway

Szimpla Kert(Simple Garden) is one of Budapest’s oldest ‘ruin’ pubs (formerly condemned or abandoned buildings in the city).  This is one of those ruin bars that you had no idea what to expect from the outside (it’s just looks like any normal entrance), but once you head in it’s the most marvelous place on earth and you feel like Alice in Wonderland. This club surprised me! It wasn’t easy to get there we did walk a lot (we could take tram but we preferred walking) but it was so worth walking around to find it…

Mixing & Serving Quarter

Szimpla daytime they say it is quiet and quirky, Around dinner time more and more people come to have a beer in the courtyard or listen to a band play in one of the rooms inside. When the sun sets they open the outdoor cocktail bar and eventually they start screening old movies on the large wall inside the courtyard (we dint stay that long). Downstairs, there are trippy psychedelic rooms and many different bars (like the one with only cocktails). In the ceiling there are bicycles, lamps, – name it and they have it. There are so many different rooms and floors, including a massive courtyard and the craziest interior design. I and my friends were constantly impressed with the diversity of this bar We mixed it up a little and moved around between the different areas and rooms, and were surprised .we could just spend 2 hours (we had our train back that evening)  there and it felt like the blink of an eye. We could easily have spent an entire day there.

I was fascinated by Szimpla and even though the crowd is quite young it’s truly something for everyone. If I lived in Budapest I would hang out here all the time. It’s an experience not to be missed awesome place, super popular but still cheap!

If you go to Budapest, put this right at the top of your “to do” list. You will not be disappointed.

What an amazing place. So much to love about it – the decor, the bathtub turned into a seating bench, and outdoor screenings of old movies(!).

I had never heard of a ruin bar before reading your post. If I ever make it to Budapest, I’ll be stopping here for sure!

      Hi Saaransh,
      “What’s in a name”😉
Szimpla ruin bar is one of the top rated bar in the world. Am not amused after I visited this place.
The place and ambience is unbeatable. An artistic place for an art lover and equally a coolest bar in town with chilled beer and music for any customary type😁

Last time when I was in Budapest with some friends, we arrived late at night and we visited the city. We had no idea where to go, so we just hit the first pub we found. After reading your post, you really made me curious to visit Szimpla Kert next time I’ll be in Budapest. It seems such a nonconformist place, and I like that! I like your pictures also!
